H.I. Quality Steel Castings Ltd Celebrates its 50th Anniversary
March 2014
From humble beginnings the purpose built foundry has developed into a world class manufacturing facility supplying steel castings worldwide.
Continued investment at the Chesterfield and Sheffield manufacturing sites has allowed the company to become a major player in the UK casting industry, an industry that we care about passionately.
The UK, and the Sheffield region in particular, is recognised worldwide as the source of casting when quality is the key driver in the purchasing decision. We are very proud to play our part in keeping this tradition alive
H.I. Quality Steel Castings has achieved OHSAS 18001:2007, the internationally recognised standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management systems.
January 2014
At the start of the year the company made a commitment to achieve OHSAS 18001 registration before the end of the year. To achieve this aim, a full and systematic assessment of the company’s processes, procedures and documentation was undertaken by the management and the Health and Safety Team to:
- Identify and evaluate occupational health and safety hazards and risks.
- Implement suitable operational controls to prevent or reduce hazards and risks.
- Implement management programs to improve existing hazard and risk controls.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legal requirements pertaining to health and safety.
In October an independent assessment of the company’s OH&S management system was conducted by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd (LRQA). The assessment consisted of seven audit days and encompassed all of the activities and processes at the company’s operational sites in Chesterfield and Sheffield and a full audit of the documented OH&S management system. Resulting from this successful audit, LRQA issued a certificate of approval to OHSAS 18001:2007 to the company on November 15th.
The aim of OHSAS 18001 is to assist organisations in managing and controlling their health and safety risks and improving their OH&S performance. Its fundamental concept is that prevention is better than cure. Achieving the standard assures our employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, regulators and the community at large that we have an internationally recognised OH&S management system in place.
Organisations with an OH&S management system in place will typically have safer and healthier workplaces, comply with regulations and meet customer expectations better than organisations that do not. Increasingly, many organisations require their suppliers to have OHSAS 18001 registration.
Achieving OHSAS 18001:2007 certification underlines the company’s commitment to continual improvement in all areas of our business.
Benefits of OHSAS 18001 registration:
- Demonstrates sound occupational health and safety performance.
- Healthier and safer working environment.
- Better management of health and safety risks, now and in the future.
- Demonstrates health and safety commitment to stakeholders.
- Fulfils requirements for supplying many Public and Private sector customers.
- Enhances the perception of the company to potential and existing customers.
- Demonstrates the continual Improvement approach to customers and prospective employees.
- Provides a solid foundation for further development of management systems.
